How many days should you spend in Lewis and Harris?
There is no correct number, and anyone who gives you one is selling something. What there is, is a set of trade-offs: each extra day buys you a specific thing, and it is worth knowing which.
The trade-off, not the answer
Lewis and Harris are one landmass, so you are never blocked by a sailing between them, but they are long, and the roads do not let you make up time. The constraint on a short trip is not what there is to see. It is how much of the day the driving takes.
The other constraint is weather. Plans made on a forecast three days out are optimistic here, and a trip with no slack in it is a trip where one bad day removes the thing you came for.
Two, three, five or seven days
- **Two days.** Stornoway and one direction out of it. Enough for a first look, not enough to see Harris properly as well. Best treated as a taster rather than a compressed tour.
- **Three days.** Lewis and Harris become possible together if you accept moving briskly, and if you are willing to lose one of the three to weather without the trip collapsing.
- **Five days.** The length most people find comfortable. Room for the west coast, the north, Harris, and a day that goes nowhere in particular.
- **Seven days.** Adds either depth (walking, beaches, going back somewhere in better light) or reach, if you continue south into the Uists and Barra. It does not comfortably add both.
Your hire includes mileage, and it pools

That matters more on a short hire than a long one. Two days of enthusiastic driving has less to pool than seven, so a compressed trip is the one where the allowance is worth a moment's thought.
Pick one thing and do it well
The most common mistake on a short trip is trying to cover the whole island chain and spending it in the car. Choosing one area and actually stopping in it is a better weekend by a wide margin.
