A seven-day Outer Hebrides road trip
A week is enough to travel the chain properly rather than sample it. The planning problem is not what to see: it is that the ferries, not you, decide the shape of the week.
The chain, and what it means for planning
Lewis and Harris are one landmass and you drive between them. North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist are joined to each other by road. Between those groups, and onward to Barra, you sail.
So the week has a small number of fixed points (the crossings) and a lot of flexibility between them. Book the sailings first and build the days around them, rather than the other way round.
North to south, usually
- Most people run the chain north to south, starting at Stornoway and finishing on Barra. It is not compulsory, but it means you finish somewhere small rather than somewhere busy.
- Give Lewis and Harris roughly half the week. They are the largest part of the chain and the part with the longest driving.
- The Uists reward a slower pace than their size suggests: the roads are flat and open, and there is more water than land in places.
- Barra is a day or two, and it is a good end to the trip rather than a rushed final stop.
A one-way hire changes this trip more than anything else
Driving the chain and then driving all the way back to return the vehicle can cost you the best part of two days. Collecting at one of our locations and returning at another removes that entirely. It is subject to availability and pre-arrangement, and any charge is confirmed before booking.
Mileage, fuel and packing
A seven-day hire includes 1050 miles, pooled across the week rather than capped daily, which suits a route with two or three long days and several short ones.
Fuel is worth planning rather than assuming, particularly in the Uists and on Barra where services are sparse. Fill up when it is convenient, not when it becomes necessary.
Pack for one vehicle for the whole week. Moving between islands with more luggage than the boot really holds is a specific and avoidable misery.
Assume one thing will move
Over a week involving several crossings, the chances of everything running to plan are not high. A cancelled sailing rearranges the rest of the trip rather than one afternoon.
