A three-day Lewis and Harris road trip
Three days is enough for both islands if you accept moving briskly and losing one of them to weather without the trip falling apart. This is a shape to adapt, not a schedule to keep.

Build it around the weather, not the clock
The single most useful planning habit here is to decide the night before rather than months ahead. Keep the order of these days flexible and spend the best weather on whichever part matters most to you.
Three days, three jobs
- **Day one: arrive and go west.** Collect the vehicle, get out of Stornoway, and spend the afternoon on the west side of Lewis. It is the easiest day to shorten if your travel in runs late.
- **Day two: south into Harris.** The long driving day. Take the direct route down and the coast road back, or the reverse, so you see both without repeating either.
- **Day three: the north, or a return visit.** Either head north on Lewis, or go back to whichever part of day one or two you rushed. The second is more often the better trip.
Plan fewer stops than you want to
Three days will not cover everything, and the version of this trip that tries is spent in the car. Two or three real stops a day, with time to actually be at them, beats six drive-bys.
Everything takes longer here than the distance suggests: single-track roads, weather and the stops themselves all conspire. Assume the drive between any two points is meaningfully longer than you expect and plan around that rather than being surprised by it.
Fuel, mileage and the return
Three rental days include 450 miles, pooled across the hire, which is comfortable for this route unless you add a long detour.
Fill up in Stornoway at the start and again before your final day. Our fuel policy is full-to-full, so the tank you return is the tank you collected. Leaving the last fill until you are near the airport or ferry is how that quietly becomes a refuelling charge.
