Full-to-full fuel, what happens if the vehicle comes back short, and how much mileage is included with every hire.
Our fuel policy is full-to-full
You collect the vehicle with a full tank and return it with a full tank. There is no fuel to buy up front and nothing to reclaim afterwards, which also means there is no benefit in returning it fuller than you found it.
What happens if it comes back short
Filling up before you return is almost always cheaper than not doing so, because two charges apply rather than one.
- Vehicles are supplied with a full tank.
- Vehicles must be returned with a full tank.
- If we have to refuel, you are charged for the fuel at the price prevailing on the day.
- A refuelling administration surcharge is charged in addition.
- The refuelling administration surcharge is £30 including VAT (£25 excluding VAT), charged in addition to the fuel itself.
Fuel is worth planning on the islands
Services are concentrated around the larger settlements and thin out quickly beyond them. The practical habit is to fill up when it is convenient rather than when it becomes necessary.
That matters most on your final day. Leaving the last fill until you are close to the airport or the ferry is how a full-to-full return quietly becomes a refuelling charge.
Every hire includes 150 miles per rental day
The allowance is cumulative across the hire, so a week's booking includes 1050 miles in total rather than a daily cap you can breach on one long day.
Beyond the included allowance, additional mileage is charged at £0.42 per mile including VAT (£0.35 excluding VAT).
Off-island travel and ferries
- There is no Car Hire Hebrides restriction on taking a vehicle off-island.
- There is no Car Hire Hebrides restriction on taking a vehicle on a ferry.
- Ferry tickets, ferry availability and the operator's own conditions are not part of your hire. Booking the crossing, and allowing time for check-in, is yours to arrange.
