Do you need a car in Lewis and Harris?
For most visitors, yes, but not for all of them, and it is worth knowing which you are before you book. The honest answer depends on where you are staying, how long for, and what you want to see.

The short answer
If you are staying outside Stornoway, or you want to reach the west coast, the north of Lewis or most of Harris, a vehicle is close to essential. The places people travel here for are spread out, and they are not all on a bus route.
If you are staying in Stornoway for a couple of days and are content to explore the town and take an organised trip or two, you can manage without one. That is a genuinely smaller group of visitors than the internet suggests, but it exists.
A car changes the trip most when
- Your accommodation is not in Stornoway. Distances between settlements are not walkable and taxis are limited.
- You want to see somewhere at a particular light or a particular tide. That is the whole argument for having your own vehicle here.
- You are travelling with children, or with camera, walking or beach kit.
- You are visiting between October and March, when daylight is short and waiting outside is unpleasant.
You may be fine without
- You are staying in Stornoway and your trip is short.
- Someone else is driving: a tour, a friend who lives here, an organised group.
- You are cycling, and have planned the trip around that rather than around a car.
Your arrival point changes the answer
Flying into Stornoway or sailing into the ferry terminal both put you in the town, where hiring is straightforward and where you have the option of a day or two without a vehicle before you collect one.
Arriving into Harris by ferry is different: there is much less around you, and a vehicle waiting for you at Tarbert is closer to a necessity than a convenience.
Book earlier than you think, especially in summer
Island availability is genuinely limited and it is not like a mainland airport where something can usually be found. If a car matters to your trip, book it when you book the accommodation rather than afterwards.
