BookBook now: CompactStornoway is the one place we hold two collection points, and which you want depends entirely on how you arrive. This page is about choosing between them and about using the town as a base.

If you fly in, collect at the airport: the desk is inside the terminal and it is the only car-hire desk in the building. If you sail from Ullapool, collect at the ferry terminal, where the handover and the return are arranged around your sailing.
Neither is better. They are two doors into the same town, and the one that suits you is the one you actually arrive at. Both are covered in full on their own pages, including what happens if the flight or the sailing moves.
You are also not committed to leaving the way you came. One-way hire between our locations is available subject to availability and pre-arrangement, so arriving by sea and leaving by air is a normal request rather than an awkward one.
Stornoway is where most Lewis and Harris trips begin, and for a short stay it works well as a single base: you drive out and back rather than moving accommodation every night.
For longer trips the calculation changes, because the far west and north of Lewis and the whole of Harris are a long way from town on roads that do not reward hurrying. That is a planning question rather than a hire question, and the guides go into it properly.
Stornoway is the largest settlement in the Outer Hebrides and has the most services of anywhere on the islands. Once you leave it, that changes quickly, and it is worth treating fuel and supplies as something to plan rather than something to find.
That is not a warning about remoteness so much as a practical difference from mainland driving, where the next town is usually close enough not to think about.
Most Stornoway trips are day trips out and back, so comfort over a few hours matters more than outright size. Availability is decided by the booking search, not by this list.
Choose the airport or the ferry terminal in the booking search and start from the door you actually arrive at.
