About the Intermediate
People arrive at this group when the Compact's boot turns out to be the thing that does not work. Two to three pieces of luggage rather than one to two, and almost no change in how the car behaves in a passing place, which is why a week away tends to land here and a long weekend does not. Five seats, five doors, manual. Everything above this in the Cars list trades a little more road presence for a little more room, so stop at whichever point your bags stop being a problem.
