Driving times and fuel stops in the Outer Hebrides
We deliberately do not publish a table of journey times or a list of fuel stops. This page explains why, and gives you something more useful: how to estimate for yourself, and how to think about fuel here.
Why there is no table on this page
A published journey time is an average of conditions that vary enormously here, and a fuel-stop list goes out of date the first time opening hours change. Both would be read months after they were written by someone who cannot easily check. We would rather give you the reasoning than a number you might rely on.
What actually determines how long a drive takes
- Whether the road is single-track. This is the dominant factor, and it is not proportional to distance: a short single-track stretch can take longer than a much longer two-lane one.
- How much traffic is coming the other way. On single-track, every meeting is a negotiation and sometimes a reverse.
- Weather. Rain, low cloud and crosswind all slow you down, and they change within a single journey.
- Livestock on the road, which is routine rather than remarkable.
- Your own stops. Most people stop far more than they planned to, and that is usually the right decision.
How to plan a day's driving
Take whatever your sat-nav or map estimates, then add a substantial margin for single-track sections and another for the stops you will actually make. If the result looks like it fills the day, it probably does.
Then decide what you would drop if the weather turned. A day plan with a known drop is a day that survives; one without becomes a day spent driving to keep to a schedule that stopped making sense at breakfast.
How to think about fuel here
- Treat half a tank as the point to start looking, not the point to worry. That single habit removes almost all the risk.
- Fill up in the larger settlements when it is convenient rather than waiting until you need to.
- Services thin out considerably as you move away from the main towns, and opening hours are not the same as on the mainland.
- Plan the last fill of your hire deliberately. Our policy is full-to-full, so the tank you return is the tank you collected.
What your hire includes
Every booking includes 150 miles per rental day, pooled across the hire rather than capped each day. For most island itineraries that is comfortable, and a long day does not put you over on its own.
It is worth a moment's arithmetic on a short hire with a lot of driving in it, where there is less allowance to pool.
